Why CBD for skin?

Inflammation is at the root of many skin conditions, causing redness, irritation, and discomfort. The research into CBD has shown it to be an excellent anti-inflammatory, helping to calm and soothe the skin, providing relief from these symptoms.

Additionally, CBD is known for its antioxidant properties, which play a crucial role in combating free radicals and oxidative stress. By neutralising these harmful molecules, CBD helps protect the skin from environmental damage and promotes a more youthful and radiant complexion.

CBD's interaction with the endocannabinoid system in the skin also contributes to its benefits. This system helps regulate various skin functions, including oil production, cell turnover, and immune response. By modulating these processes, CBD can promote balanced oil production, support healthy skin cell turnover, and calm overactive immune responses.

Furthermore, CBD is a gentle and natural ingredient, making it suitable for a wide range of skin types. It works harmoniously with the skin's natural processes, without causing excessive dryness, irritation, or sensitivity.

Research into CBD for skin

Preclinical evidence suggests that CBD is effective as a topical cream for eczema, psoriasis, dry skin and inflammatory conditions. A 2020 review noted that whilst further clinical studies into the efficacy of CBD for skin conditions are certainly welcomed, recent research indicates the critical role of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in maintaining skin homeostasis and barrier function with its dysregulation being implicated in various skin disorders

A 2014 study showed that CBD oil prevented the sebaceous gland cells from secreting too much sebum and exerted anti-inflammatory actions that prevented the activation of acne agents such as inflammatory cytokines. Another study found that due to the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD oil, treating acne using CBD oil could be an efficient and safe option.

CBD, hormones and acne

Hormones can play a significant role in acne development, and the way they affect acne can differ between men and women.

Androgens are a group of hormones, including testosterone, that are present in both men and women but typically at higher levels in males. Increased androgen levels can stimulate the sebaceous glands in the skin to produce more sebum (oil). Excess sebum can clog pores and create an ideal environment for the growth of acne-causing bacteria.

Acne break outs can be a common occurrence for some women just before their period. Estrogen and progesterone levels drop triggering an increase in the production of sebum, which is an oily secretion made by the skin. This can clog pores and cause a break out.

Q&A on CBD for skin

Can I use CBD for eczema?

Open tab

Yes certainly. With significant anti-inflammatory properties and the ability to reduce inflammation associated with eczema, CBD has been shown to have great benefits for those managing this skin condition. By calming the immune response and decreasing inflammation, CBD can provide relief from the symptoms of eczema.

CBD creams offer moisturising and soothing effects for dry and irritated skin. CBD interacts with receptors in the skin, potentially regulating oil production and enhancing hydration. This can help alleviate dryness, redness, and discomfort commonly experienced with eczema.

Eczema can often lead to intense itching, which can worsen the condition and disrupt sleep. CBD's interaction with the body's cannabinoid receptors may help alleviate itchiness by reducing the signaling of itch sensations. By soothing the skin and reducing the urge to scratch, CBD can provide relief from eczema-related itching.

Can I use CBD for psoriasis?

Open tab

CBD can be used for psoriasis and has been shown to have immunomodulatory effects and anti-inflammatory properties, which can help to reduce the excessive skin cell growth and inflammation associated with psoriasis.

The accelerated production of skin cells associated with psoriasis can result in the formation of thick, scaly patches. CBD has shown potential in regulating abnormal cell growth and promoting a more balanced skin cell turnover process. This may help prevent the excessive buildup of skin cells and support the normalisation of skin texture.

Stress can be a trigger for psoriasis flare-ups. With anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) and stress-reducing effects CBD calms the nervous system, promotes relaxation and reduces cortisol levels, helping in the management of stress resulting in the reduced the potential for psoriasis flare-ups.

Can I use CBD for acne?

Open tab

Research, as well as anecdotal evidence, has shown that CBD could help those with acne due to its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to decrease sebum production as well as its anti-microbial effects.

Characterised by inflammation in the skin and the production of excess sebum (oil), acne can lead to redness and swelling. By calming the skin and decreasing inflammatory markers, CBD can help reduce the inflammatory response associated with acne. And by regulating the sebum production in the skin's sebaceous glands CBD can help control the amount of oil produced, which can be beneficial for preventing clogged pores and the formation of acne lesions.

Some studies also suggest that CBD exhibits antibacterial effects against certain bacteria, including propionibacterium acnes, which is commonly associated with acne. By inhibiting the growth of these bacteria, CBD may help reduce the risk of infection and inflammation in the affected areas.

Can I use CBD for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) acne?

Open tab

Shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties and the ability to decrease sebum production meaning that CBD offers great benefits to those with acne caused by Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).

This hormonal disorder that affects women is characterised by elevated androgen levels meaning that those with PCOS are more prone to developing acne due to the hormonal imbalance and increased sebum production.

Can I use CBD for menopause skin dryness?

Open tab

During the perimenopause and menopause there is a significant decline in the production of estrogen and progesterone. These hormonal changes can have various effects on the skin including a decrease in sebum production, resulting in drier skin. The skin may feel rough, itchy, and more prone to irritation.

Studies suggest that CBD may help regulate sebum production in the skin. By balancing oil production, CBD may be beneficial for individuals experiencing either excess dryness (or oiliness), helping to promote more balanced and healthier-looking skin.
